Kasari luht kaigub saabuvate rändlindude hõigetest - sajad ja tuhanded väike- ning laululuiged, haned, pardid-vardid... sa lihtsalt pead seda ise nägema ja kogema. Today in the morning my bird-feeding board was visited by Mr. Hawfinch in person. What a beak, indeed! The Hawfinch was behaving friendly. All the Greenfinches, Siskins, Bullfinches, Tits and Nuthatches could hustle on as usual.

Last week, while driving to Tallinn, I noticed a Hawk Owl sitting on a power-line right beside the road. Some days later, in a nice and sunny morning I was watching Black Grouses at the edge of a bog. There were four distant Roe Deers and a Fox was sneaking around at a forest some hundred meters away. A Black Grouse cock was staring on a top of a tree. After a while another cock landed nearby and one more to the treetop. It wasn’t lekking yet, but quite obvious intent. On my way back I tried a shortcut, but the ice on the ditch didn’t hold any more and I found myself in the water up to my knees. An unhoped deja-vu it was - I felt myself like a schoolgirl again.

One night, when I was driving back home from Pärnu, a Ural Owl was flying across the road. Somewhat later a sleepy-looking Raccoon Dog was strolling to the roadside bushes, avoiding the beam of light.

Whooping Swans fly already over my house, White-backed Woodpeckers are drumming in the park and the water-level of the low reaches of the River Kasari is rising daily. This year is the first time when the Environmental Board has given us a special permission to organize canoe trips in the Matsalu National Park as early as from the 15 April. It is a marvellous time. The flood-plain of the River Kasari is full of bird-sounds - hundreds and thousands of migrating birds are arriving every day and stopping over here. There are Bewick and Whooper Swans, all kinds of Geese and Ducks ... everyone should get a first-hand experience. Ask Your friends out and book early - this beautiful time won’t last forever!

Eelmisel nädalal Tallinna sõites nägin Laitse kandis vöötkakku, istus elektriliinil otse tee ääres. Mõni päev hiljem käisin raba servas tetresid kaemas. Ilus päikesepaisteline hommik oli. Neli kitse sõi eemal, rebane luusis metsaservas ja üksik tedrekukk vahtis kaugemal puu otsas. Hiljem maandus lumele veel üks ja puu otsa tuli teine juurde. Päris mänguks veel ei läinud, kuid juba sättisid. Tagasi tulles tahtsin "lõigata", kuid vajusin ühe jalaga kraavijääst põlvist saati vette. No oli see vast deja vu - tundsin end kaheksa-aastase kooliplikana.

Ühel õhtul Pärnust koju sõites lendas händkakk napilt üle tee, päev hiljem lonkis kährik pimeduses auto eest põõsastesse. Laululuiged lendavad üle katuse, valgeselg põristab hommikuti pargis, veetase Penijõel ja Kasaril tõuseb iga päevaga.

Spring has arrived in Estonia. Although our fields are still covered with a thick layer of snow, this does not stop the arrival of the first spring migrants - Skylarks, Lapwings and Starlings. In few weeks, fields in West-Estonia will be covered with thousands Bewick's and Whooper Swans, White-fronted and Bean Geese, feeding up for the long journey to the arctic tundra.

Many of our forest birds are now active. On sunny mornings woodpeckers defend their territories, producing often stunning views of White-backed or Three-toed Woodpeckers. Recent sighting suggest that woodpeckers are doing well after last winter. Bogs are now resounding with lekking Black Grouse.

An early Spring trip to Estonia is a good chance to experience spectacular bird migration, observe forest bird specialities together with some very special wintering birds that are still present. In recent counts at least 200 Steller`s Eiders are in a tight flock at their main wintering area and several Hawk Owls have been found wintering at various sites round the country.

Paketi lühikirjeldus:

Retk algab meie kuninglike põlisasukate tetrede pulmamängu jälgimisega. Igaüks neist püüab olla neist kohevama sabaga ja kõvema kudrutusega. Tõeline tegija leitakse platsi keskelt – just siin on kõige tugevamad, kõige uhkemad ja kõige vägevamad tedrekuked, kes üldjuhul ka tedremammaga lähemat tutvust teha saavad. Edasi liigume Tuksi-Roosta kanti, kus õnnestub kohata ka laanepüüd. Metsise nägemiseks peab väga palju õnne olema. Paneme reisile kaasa piknikukorvi, teine võimalus on süüa peale linnuvaatlust Roostal.

Kana on kindlasti igaüks näinud ja nii mõnigi ilmselt ka maistnud. Aga on ka veel teistmoodi kanasid – need on metsakanad. Eestimaa metsades võib kohtuda kolme kanalisega – laanepüü, tedre ja metsisega. Linnuretkel näeme tetre ja kui õnne on, siis ka laanepüüd.
